Renfrew county is letting people know about the Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar.
They say that they are ‘venomous’ and according to the county, may be in Renfrew County & District.
The caterpillar is described as white and fluffy, has black chain-like markings on its back and long black hairs that stick out near the front and back.
People are advised not to touch the caterpillars.
According to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, they can cause a rash, similar to that caused by nettles or poison ivy. Symptoms range from slight reddening of the skin to a burning sensation with swelling and pain.
Some people may experience a headache, nausea or an allergic reaction.
According to the health unit, anyone who has touched one of these caterpillars should wash the affected area with soap and water as soon as possible.
In the case of itching or swelling, apply calamine lotion and/or ice packs to the affected areas. Individuals who experience more generalized allergic reactions should seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.
