Many in the community are mourning the loss of Ed Reinhardt, community trail builder and founding member of the Broken Spokes Cycling Club.
Ed grew up in the area and first made bike paths from the logging roads, walking paths and game trails he played on as a kid.
Longtime friend and Broken Spokes member Rob Metzger spoke about Ed’s passion for the outdoors:
“He was just a natural. He was a moto-cross rider, he was a rock climber, ice climber, canoeist, a phenomenal hockey player” Said Metzger, “He loved to play on an outdoor rink. He loved to be outside”
The broken spokes is now in its 33rd year. Children of original club members are riding themselves, and the club has agreements with Joy Camp and the Airport to build trails.
More trails have also been built in Vance farm park, where Ed first built paths many years ago.
North Hastings High School has trail building workshops they now run through their Northern Environmental Research and Development (NERDS) and NOS courses.
All of these things have happened because of Ed Reinhardt’s original work and vision.
