Electric vehicle (EV) drivers may have more places to charge up in Bancroft in the future.
Town officials are looking into a new program that aims to make rural communities more friendly for those who drive non-gas consuming EVs.
Last month, Ontario announced it’s putting $91 million towards the EV Charge On program to get more charging stations in small and medium-sized communities.
Bancroft General Manager Andra Kauffeldt says municipal staff will attend a session with the Ministry of Energy later this month to learn more about making applications to the fund. Staff is already reviewing Town-owned locations where chargers could be placed.
She says, “Electric vehicles are the way of the future so it would be wonderful to be able to provide the resource for visitors to our community and to capitalize on grant funding to minimize the costs to the municipality to do so.”
She says a report to council outlining possibilities will be written when more is known.
The EV Charge On program supports plans to make EVs more common. The Ontario government expects that, by 2030, over one million EVs will be on Ontario’s roads.
