Bancroft council has approved the work on Highway 28 to go forward with the Leveque Bros doing the heavy lifting once construction gets underway.
The province is covering 90 percent of work, with the Town of Bancroft covering the remaining 10 percent. Public Works Manager Perry Kelly told council last week that the project will cost $1,975,924 with $1,642,069 being covered by the grant the Town got from the provincial government. The remaining $170,460 will be covered by the Town. Kelly said that money will come from gas tax funding.
The road from the OPP station going south towards Peterborough will be torn up and re-paved. A designated landing spot for truck drivers will also be created on both sides of the road. Kelly said the traffic signals at the intersection between the Tim Hortons and Shell Station is going forward as well. “It will definitely enhance the safety of the intersection,” he said of the two additions. The entrance and exits to the gas station will also be re-worked to be made safer.
The centre line culvert at the intersection of Valleyview Drive will be replaced as well. “The existing culvert is more south of the intersection and it’s extremely deep in the ground,” he said last week. He explained they’re going to decommission it in place and cap each end with aggregate and concrete. Kelly said the cost is too high to remove it.
The new culvert position will mitigate damage from potential flooding.
Leveque Bros will also work on the water main replacement along the Highway. “We definitely need to do some water main upgrades in the area,” Kelly told council. He added that they applied for funding, but were not successful. The bill for the project will come out to $224,859.
The new PVC piping will replace the cast iron piping that is currently in place. “The new water main will be PVC and will give substantial years of useful life to this section of our infrastructure,” Kelly said.
That project will cost $224,859. Kelly said that will be paid for through funding from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund and through user charges from the past year.
The date has yet to be announced, Kelly said it’s likely to get started by the end of the month, or the beginning of August.
