Apsley RBC to close; merge into Lakefield

The only bank in Apsley will be closing its doors. Royal Bank of Canada has confirmed it will be closing its Apsley branch on April 20th, 2018, and merging it with the Lakefield branch.

Kawartha Lakeshore Regional Vice President Scott Mancini say the move is the most efficient way to continue to serve the community in the future, as more clients are opting to use online banking and other technology.

Mancini says, following the merger, all accounts will automatically be transferred to the Lakefield branch, which is about 45 kilometres away from the village. But, he also says there will still be an ATM in the community, and that the company is committed to providing quality service to its clients. Formal letters will be sent to clients next week, who are welcome to reach out to RBC to find out more.

The branch has been in Apsley for more than 56 years, and Mancini says the decision to relocate was not easy.

Some residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the closure on a Facebook page called ‘Stop Apsley RBC Closure.’ Amanda Gray, a former RBC employee, has also created an online petition which will be sent to the company urging it to keep the branch open. Gray says closing the financial institution will have an adverse effect on local businesses, seniors, tourism, and real estate.

North Kawartha Mayor Rick Woodcock says RBC has let the township know about its intention not to renew the lease for the building it operates in Apsley. However, he says council has not received any official word about the closure.
