Bancroft OPP investigate suspected drowning on Faraday Lake

Bancroft OPPP are continuing to investigate a suspected drowning that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man from Scarborough.

Emergency crews were called to Faraday Lake just after 10:30 a.m. on April 28, after a canoe carrying three people capsized. Two of the canoe’s occupants managed to reach the shore safely, while a third remained missing.

OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was brought in and later recovered a body from the lake. Police confirmed the victim was the missing young man.

Officers say the man was not wearing a life jacket.

The OPP is urging the public to treat Ontario’s waters with caution, especially in early spring when the water remains dangerously cold despite the rising air temperatures.

“Wearing a life jacket isn’t optional—it’s your best shot at survival if something goes wrong out there,” police said in a release.

The investigation remains ongoing.
