Zumba, socials, line dancing and more with new funding for seniors programming

Care North Hastings (CNH) are being awarded funds for a Senior’s Active Living Centre.

The community has received $12,000 in start-up funds and will receive $55,000 per year to facilitate programming for area seniors.

Monica Sears, community outreach coordinator for CNH, said they are excited to partner with community members to discover how best to meet their needs and interests.

“They say ‘seniors centre,’ but it’s for anyone 55-plus, or any adults 18-plus with a disability. It’s completely dependent on what they want to see from their club.

“So it’s for seniors by seniors….it’s about partnering with things that are going on in our community already and either offering to help facilitate, provide space for it or get members to join our club to then be like, ‘well I really want to do some chair exercises or I want to try line dancing or oh, I want to do bingo, whatever it is'”.

Sears said for the month of March the club has been hosting a social at the Leaf Centre (upstairs in the North Hastings Community Centre).

“We’re doing a drop in social…you can come see what this space is about and just get a little bit more information about our memberships, our programs.. and if you haven’t signed up, I have membership forms and waivers and all those things.”

Because funding is now secured for the senior’s club, the membership fee is only $25 for the year.

Sears said they are looking into transportation so people in retirement residences in the area can catch a lift to activities.

“It’s still fairly new but I’ve connected with BCT (Bancroft Community Transit) to see if  we could work into having a weekly-type pickup. So a program [that] starts at 10 (a.m.) for example, pickup is for 9:30 (a.m.) outside the Chateau, or whatever it might be, and go along the bus route.”

Activities in the April schedule include line dancing, Zumba, chair exercises, ‘Family history with Nancy’ and ‘a social, card games and crafts’ on Friday afternoons.
