Officials from all levels of government are responding to the US election.
Doug Ford said in a statement that he offers his congratulations to Trump and Vice President JD Vance on their election.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also offered his congratulations on X saying that “the friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world.”
He added that he and President Trump “will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both of our nations.”
Closer to home, Bancroft Mayor Paul Jenkins also acknowledged the symbiotic relationship between Canada and the US, when asked how this election could affect our region.
“Canada as a whole, and people, no matter what party they support, may want to look at who they think might be able to work best with the Trump. So in a way yes, it could have an influence and that’s for them to decide- who is going to be the best to work with the Americans. Because we’ll have our own election soon too.”
Jenkins also noted that it was unfortunate that negativity can be used to fuel election campaigns.
“Many elections at the higher levels, it all comes down to negativity and doom and gloom as to dictate who wins… that’s the part i find it unfortunate. I also think women were big losers in this election. Not that I’m a Republican or a Democrat, but just looking at what’s there on the surface.”
The next Canadian federal election date is currently set for Oct. 25 2025.
