Canada Day: Where to find the fun, the fireworks and the free poutine

With the Canada Day weekend upon us there’s an array of celebrations taking place through the weekend. Here’s what’s going on: 

(Note-There are no fireworks in Bancroft, here’s where you can see them: Apsley, Gooderham, Barry’s Bay, Palmer Rapids, Madawaska and Whitney.)

Bancroft

Bancroft will be celebrating on Monday in Riverside Park from 1-6 p.m. Opening ceremonies will feature the Shawashkong Ikwe singers. Wattle and Daub will have the famous Hoover donuts and the much-loved Salt Cellars will kick off the musical line up. MooseFM also got a hot tip that local legend John Foreman will be performing on the porch of the North Hastings Heritage Museum at around 12:30 (stellar musicians Ron and Leslie of Appalachian Celtic may be there as well). Highlands East 

On July 1: In Cardiff, from 9 a.m.to 11 a.m. the Royal Canadian Legion will host a pancake breakfast. In Highland Grove, from noon to three at the Kidd Schoolhouse Museum there’ll be children’s crafts, local entertainment, horseshoes and a BBQ. In Wilberforce, the Red Cross Outpost Museum will be open with a flag raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m.. As well as live entertainment followed by sandwiches and cake. Then noon to 3 p.m. games at the Curling club. Tory Hill , from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will feature live musician Phil O’Reilly with stories of local history. In Gooderham there will be children’s activities, face painting, a clown cake, barbecue and irondale display. Live entertainment starts at 7 p.m. and fireworks start at about 10 p.m.

Coe Hill (on Sunday June 30) 

There will be a parade starting at the Pavillion at 1:30 June 30, and ending at the new Fire Hall celebrations at 2 p.m. There will be a BBQ, guest speakers and live music, followed by fireworks. 

Apsley 

Apsley Canada Day Parade is on July 1st at 4 p.m.The North Hastings Highlanders pipe band will be marching. Head over to the Lions Club Park after the parade for a grand celebration “filled with delicious food, exciting games, and activities for all ages.” 

Fireworks follow. 

Palmer Rapids  

Celebrations kick off at 3 p.m. at the community center with a Canada Day cake followed by games and more kids activities. The BLR fire department is hosting free poutine from 5-7 p.m. and the BLR recreation committee is hosting free hot dogs. Fireworks take place at dusk. 

Killaloe 

Celebrations kick off July 1 at 3 p.m. at St Andrews School, featuring a bouncy house, live music and games. There will also be a fundraising BBQ, Killaloe foodbank food drive and beavertails. 

Friday June 29 8pm-1am at the Killaloe Lions Hall there will be a Canada Day dance. Admission is $5 or free with a costume.  

Whitney 

On June 29, Canada Day celebrations take place at the Lester Smith Building. 2nd annual corn hole tournament is happening. There will be food, a beer tent, music and kids activities. Fireworks be on July 1. 

Madawaska 

OnJuly 1, Canada Day are taking place at J.R. Booth Park. There will be a bouncy castle. Music from 1-4 p.m. and a BBQ at 6 p.m. Fireworks at dusk. 

Barry’s Bay and Wilno 

At the Legion on Saturday June 29, Canada Day celebrations are happening. On July 1 celebrations happen at Wilno Heritage Park. 

From Madawaska Valley Township:”Join us next weekend for Canada Day activities in the Township! Saturday June 29: Canada Day at the Legion, 11am-4:30pm.Head out to the Legion for a magician show (11am), race cars (12pm), live music on the patio, face painting and a balloon clown (11am-1pm), and a BBQ! 

“Monday July 1: Canada Day in Wilno, 11am-3pm: Sweets and treats, music, and children activities at Wilno Heritage Park’s annual festivities!” Madawaska Valley annual fireworks show will take place at dusk on July 1 around Lakeshore Drive.
