A new fitness centre has taken shape upstairs of Bancroft’s arena.
The Town has unveiled the Lifestyle Enrichment and Fitness Centre at the North Hastings Community Centre.
People behind the project gathered for an opening ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the centre, which will also go by the acronym, “LEAF.”
The ceremony took place almost exactly a year to the date when Bancroft secured funding for the centre. It was paid for through a $500,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. A federal Community Revitalization Fund also put $168,000 towards the project.
The gym meets modern accessibility standards; a newly installed elevator can get people upstairs.
Bancroft General Manager Andra Kauffeldt pointed out that there’s space in between treadmills, weightlifting machines, and other exercise equipment, so people with mobility challenges can move around.
“We really wanted to make sure that folks who wouldn’t be comfortable in a traditional gym still had a place to go, where they could access wellness and fitness services in an environment that was comfortable for them,” she says.
