The Bancroft Area Stewardship Council will hold a zebra mussel blitz once the weather heats up. Chair Ian Hendry says the goal is to educate boat and property owners about how the invasive species spread from lake to lake, and how they threaten the environment and the economy.
The blitz will target four of the area’s busiest lakes. On May 18th and the 19th, the council will be at Hay Lake near Lake St. Peter and Jack’s Lake near Apsley during the opening weekend for Walleye. Then on June 22nd and the 23rd, the council will be at Paudash and Baptiste lakes for the opening weekend for Bass. Hendry says there will be a lot of information presented during these events.
The blitz is a partnership between BASC, the Bancroft Area Youth Stewardship Council, the North Hastings Fish Hatchery, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Leading up to it, there will be an information meeting at Club 580 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday for anyone who is interested in taking part.
